FDA Approves Two New Combination Vaccines for Children
The FDA has approved a pair of combination pediatric vaccines, the manufacturers recently announced.
The agency has licensed the pentavalent vaccine, Pentacel, for use in children aged 6 weeks through 4 years. The four-dose vaccine immunizes against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, poliomyelitis, and Haemophilus influenzae type b. The vaccine, which was tested in clinical trials of more than 5000 children, is expected to be available in the U.S. this summer.
In addition, a new quadrivalent vaccine, called Kinrix, has been approved to protect against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, and polio in children 4 to 6 years old, following a randomized trial of some 3200 children.
