Celecoxib Lowers Restenosis in Paclitaxel-Coated Stents
Patients receiving paclitaxel-coated stents had less restenosis at 6 months if they took celecoxib twice daily, the Lancet reports.
Researchers randomized 274 patients undergoing stenting to either 200 mg of celecoxib twice a day or no further adjunctive therapy (all patients received aspirin and clopidogrel). The patients were part of a study assessing the drug's role in reducing neointimal hyperplasia. At 6 months, quantitative angiography revealed less loss in luminal diameter among the celecoxib group (0.49 mm) than among the controls (0.75 mm).
Editorialists as well as the authors caution against applying the results clinically until much larger studies with longer follow-up are undertaken.
