Contact Lens Solution Associated with Amoeba Infection

Advanced Medical Optics has recalled its Complete MoisturePlus contact lens solution because of an association with Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK).

The CDC, in an MMWR dispatch, described two case-control analyses showing an elevated risk for AK among users of the solution (odds ratios, 7.3 and 20.3). AK, which is caused by a common waterborne amoeba, can result in vision loss or blindness if not treated.

The CDC recommends that soft contact lens wearers who have used the solution should discard it, along with their current lenses and storage containers, and see a healthcare provider if they have any signs of eye infection, such as eye pain or redness, blurred vision, sensitivity to light, a sensation of something in the eye, or excessive tearing. Clinicians and labs can report cases by calling 1-770-488-7775.
