CDC Issues Interim Haemophilus Vaccine Guidelines
The CDC has issued interim guidelines for Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib) vaccine use because of an anticipated shortage resulting from Merck's recall of PedvaxHIB and Comvax.
In a report in MMWR, released online, the CDC recommends that providers temporarily defer administering the booster dose usually given at age 12 to 15 months, except in children at high risk. These include children with HIV, sickle cell disease, asplenia, cancer, and certain other immunodeficiency syndromes.
Merck does not expect to resume production of its Hib vaccines until the end of 2008. The CDC says supplies of Sanofi Pasteur's two Hib vaccines probably will not be adequate to make up for the shortfall.
