FDA Warns Physicians About Chantix
Some patients have reported depressed mood, suicidal ideation, erratic behavior, and excessive drowsiness within days to weeks of starting treatment with the smoking cessation agent Chantix (varenicline), the FDA announced.
The agency, which is reviewing all reports, notes: "The role of Chantix in these cases is not clear because smoking cessation, with or without treatment, is associated with nicotine withdrawal symptoms and has also been associated with the exacerbation of underlying psychiatric illness." However, some of the patients were still smoking at the time of the reports, and not all had preexisting psychiatric conditions.
